The TURNER MUSEUM OF GLASS....

The Museum was founded in 1943 by Professor W.E.S.Turner and was located in the University of Sheffield where he worked.
In 1993 the museum was moved to the Dept. of Engineering Materials.
An interactive image of the panel is used on their website http://www.turnermuseum.group.shef.ac.uk/mosaic.html

ORIGINAL DESIGN...........

I found the original design for this panel in the archives of the V&A.
It was by my grandfather James Hogan RDI (1883_1948) who worked for James Powell all his life.
I would like to thank Dr. Dennis Hadley for his lists of Opus sectile, which show the locations of many of the production pieces by James Powell.
The original cost of the panel was £250

OPUS SECTILE IS MADE FROM GROUND GLASS.

This video from the Corning Museum shows how ground glass is used.
At Whitefriars the ground glass would have been sprinkled onto large sheets and then fused. These sheets of glass are then cut much like stained glass. Designs are painted onto the larger pieces and then fired again.

ATTENTION TO DETAIL.

Note how the line of the mosaic is carried through the inscription and the island is also shown.
It would have been so much easier to just have plain panels but the overall effect would have been lost !
